Nairobi Governor nominates 5 women to take up Deputy Governor's position

The governor initially had a list of 22 people

Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has nominated five women to take up the position of Deputy Governor after Polycarp Igathe’s resignation.

Sonko in a post titled ‘The Incoming Deputy Governor’ revealed that he had forwarded names of the five nominees to the Speaker of Nairobi County Assembly for consideration.

“Pursuant to the Supreme Court advisory opinion I have today forwarded a list of 5 nominees to the speaker of the county assembly Hon. Beatrice Elachi for consideration,” said part of his statement.

He also said that he has called for a special sitting where Nairobi MCA’s will vet the nominees and decide who will be Deputy Governor.

“I have also directed the Nairobi county assembly to have a special sitting tomorrow through a special gazette notice to be issued later today after 12pm. The Honorable members of the Nairobi county assembly will vet, debate and finally vote to decide who becomes the 3rd Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County.” He said.

Those nominated are former Nairobi Woman Representative and current CAS Gender & Youth Ministry Rachel Shebesh, Former ODM nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro, Citizen TV news anchor Ann Kiguta, Lawyer Karen Nyamu and Business Woman Agness Kariuki.

Governor Sonko on 19 March released a list of 22 names of people he would prefer to replace ex-deputy governor Polycarp Igathe with the help of Nairobi residents after the Supreme Court ruled that governors would be allowed to nominate fresh nominees within 14 days to replace their deputies who resign, die in office or are impeached.

The nominees would then have to be approved by County Assemblies within 60 days after which the successful appointee would take oath of office.
