The chaos started when inmates blocked wardens from carrying out a search in the prison.
According to reports, the warders battled inmates resisting surrender of contraband that had been sneaked into cells.
In the past such searches saw wardens retrieve contraband such as phones, knives, razor blades, laptops, sim cards and internet modems suspected to have been used to con members of the public.
Other contraband include cigarettes, hard drugs, daggers curved from iron rods, electric cookers and coils.
Although Kamiti is Kenya's biggest maximum prison, criminals still manage to sneak contraband into the facility in a racket suspected to involve warders and managers.
