No diamond that big has been unearthed in the country since 1970 after the 969-carat Star of Sierra Leone was dug up.
BBC reports that the diamond was first taken to the President or Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma on Wednesday, March 25, 2017, before it was taken to the bank.
A statement from the presidency reads, "The President thanked local chief and his people for not smuggling the diamond out of the country.
"Mr Korom said that the owners should get what is due to them and it should benefit the country as a whole."
