Food poisoning, drinking contaminated water, antibiotics, bacterial and viral infections are some of the major causes of diarrhea. How long it lasts depends on its severity and can go up to two weeks or only last for a day.
Eat the BRAT diet
But even if it lasts for a few hours, diarrhea can make the few hours hell on earth. And apart from the numerous visits to the bathroom, diarrhea dehydrates you and is at times accompanied by stomach upset. So, the best thing to do if you have diarrhea is to see a doctor for treatment.
But before then, you can try out some of these home remedies if the condition is not as bad:
1. Honey
If you got some honey left, mix it with hot water and let it cool before drinking. Honey has been used for years to treat diarrhea at home.
2. Drink plenty of fluids
You lose a lot of water through diarrhea. Keep on drinking water and other fluids to replace the lost water.
3. BRAT diet
The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) are low in fiber. While fiber is good for digestion, you will want to go slow on it if you have diarrhea. It helps to stick to the BRAT diet until you stop diarrhea.
4. Yogurt
While most dairy products are not good for diarrhea, yogurt has good bacteria that helps in calming down diarrhea. Other foods that work include potatoes and peanut butter.
5. Avoid foods that give you gas
They will make the condition worse. Keep off from spicy foods, fatty foods, beans, and caffeinated drinks.
6. Avoid exercise
You are already losing lots of water and you do not want to dehydrate your body through exercise.
Last but most importantly, stay close to the bathroom. Things happen very fast at such times.
