This is according to a study conducted among 385 rape victims that were treated at Kenyatta National Hospital to assess the uptake of medication by rape victims to protect against HIV infections.

35 of the victims were men with 15 of them claiming to have been raped by women.

Researchers seem to be believe that men who claim to have been raped by women, may have been involved in risky and consensual sex and therefore are scared to speak about it.

They then use the cover of being raped so as to get access to Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), HIV prevention treatment, which is administered within 72 hours of rape.

72 percent of rapists were said to be known to the victims with 59 of the reported cases being friends.

207 rape survivors had been put on PEP with only 70 of them having completed the recommended 28 days of medication.

Only 21 rape survivors on PEP returned for a repeat HIV test at 3 months.
