Samuel Wamathai sworn in as Nyeri’s Governor

Samuel Wamathai has been sworn in as Nyeri’s new governor following the death of Nderitu Gachagua last Friday.

Gachagua passed away on Friday morning while undergoing cancer treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, United Kingdom.

The swearing-in was presided over by Resident Judge Jarius Ngaah in the presence of Council of Governors (CoG) Chairman Peter Munya and various leaders from the county including Members of Parliament and Members of the County Assembly.

Wamathai pledged to tackle corruption and continue with his predecessor’s development record in Nyeri County.

The new Governor hailed the late Gachagua, saying he was totally committed to the social economic development of Nyeri County.

Wamathai praised devolution saying it offered the people the best opportunity to develop and pledged to serve the Nyeri people with diligence and integrity.

He promised to release the supplementary budget for tea farmers that was overseen by the late Gachagua.

“We shall also complete the construction of our markets, grant our women and youth opportunities to grow economically,” Wamathai said.

The CoG Chairman said that the Council of Governors had lost one of their biggest champions and death has robbed them of one of the best leaders.

According to the constitution, upon the death of a governor in the second half of the term, the deputy will serve the remaining term and may vie for the seat for two other terms.

The Gachagua family have said plans to have the body flown to Kenya were under way.

The burial date is yet to be set, pending consultations between the family and the Office of the President, but prayers will commence at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi from Tuesday.
