5 police killed in new attack

5 police officers have been killed whereas 2 others have been injured in an ambush by suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen in Garissa County.

According to the police,  the gunmen attacked the officers at Alijize area on Bodhai-Ijara road. The militants are said to have burnt the Land Cruiser vehicle that the officers were using and escaped with their guns after the 1 pm incident.

Witnesses said the injured officers hid in the bush as they sought reinforcement before they were helped. The bodies and the injured officers were airlifted to Nairobi.

North Eastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh said the attackers escaped soon after the attack.

“They burnt the vehicle that the officers had before escaping. We are pursuing them,” he said.

A number of police officers are in the area to pursue the gunmen.
