The court on Wednesday directed the detention of Evans Masaku Kasyoki following allegations that he killed his nephew in a bid to benefit from a Sh9 million life insurance policy.
According to the ruling, Kasyoki will be remanded at Machakos GK prison until September 17, 2018. The court also ordered that he undergoes a mental assessment at Mathari hospital before the set date for the hearing.
Kasyoki, a former manager in one of the insurance firms, is linked to the murder of Eric Makau Musyoka.
In an exposé on Citizen TV dubbed Murder for Profit, Kasyoki listed himself as a beneficiary of Eric’s life insurance policy.
Almost one year later, Eric ended up dead and his body dumped near his home.
Though the uncle denied any involvement in the murder, last year the office of the DPP in Kangundo asked locals to help search for Musyoki after he was linked to the death. However, he was never apprehended.
The postmortem indicated that Eric was hit by a blunt object.
After the burial, Musyoki allegedly tried to reclaim the money from the two insurance companies. He purportedly did this without the knowledge or consent of Eric’s parents or siblings.
