Speaking to the media on Wednesday when he disclosed details of Nairobi’s Education CEC Janet Ouko’s resignation, Sonko said he would also announce new members of the County Executive on the same day.
His announcement comes almost one year after the resignation of former Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe.
Sonko’s press conference
Governor Sonko invited the press to explain why he had accepted his Education CEC's resignation and also addressed media reports that painted him as an incompetent county boss.
The county boss then accused Janet Ouko of corrupt dealings and misappropriation of bursary funds.
"What I tell Janet is, this is 2019 and corruption will not be tolerated. Investigations are underway and we will identify those who conspired with fraudsters to steal billions of bursary funds," he stated.
Ms. Ouko in her statement accused the governor of incompetence and was not good to run the city of Nairobi.
"It is not fine to have people living under fear of blackmail, EACC, arresting, locking up offices, its chaos..." she said.
In October 2018, the Nairobi County Public Service Board called for applications for five positions of CEC’s in part of governor Sonko’s move to replace sacked County Executives and those whose contracts had run out.
With Ouko’s exit, Nairobi County remains with only four County Executives working Devolution’s Larry Wambua, Finance-Allan Igambi, Lands-Charles Kerich and Transport’s Mohammed Dagane in office.
