Lamu West MP Stanley Muthama charged with tax evasion, released on Sh500,000 cash bail

Lamu West Member of Parliament Stanley Muthama was on Monday presented in court to answer to charges of tax evasion.

The MP denied the charge on Sh487 million tax fraud by a company he owns and was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000.

The legislator was arrested on Thursday night at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after being trailed by DCI officers.

Muthama appeared at an Eldoret Court and a mention of the case was scheduled for a later date.

Starehe MP Charles Njagua alias Jaguar who was still in police custody on Monday, filed a fresh motion for his bail.

His lawyers, who presented the application at the High Court seeking his release, argued that his detention was based on mere allegations.

The Starehe representative was arrested following what were termed as xenophobic utterances against Tanzanian and Ugandan nationals.
