Maraga response to Matiang’i after attacking judges

Maraga takes on Matiang'i

Chief Justice David Maraga has for the first time commented on the scathing attack launched by Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi against the Judiciary.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Mr Maraga dismissed Matiang’i’s allegations that there was an evil cliqueof judges favouring the Opposition in their rulings.

"It is not true that any judges have been captured by the opposition, as it is being said," he said.

The CJ advised Matiang’i to wait for the Court of Appeal’s decision if he does not agree with the rulings made by High court judge George Odunga and Lady Justice Roselyne Aburili on lawyer Miguna Miguna’s case.

“It is the orders they are issuing in their normal course of business. They could make mistakes in those orders. And we are saying, if they make mistakes, let there be an appeal. And when it is filed, wait for the matter to be dealt with," the CJ noted.

Maraga then evaded to delved further into the matter noting that it was still being handled by the court.

"That is why I do not want to comment on the minister’s comments. Let the Court of Appeal deal with that,” Maraga said.

On Tuesday, Mr Matiang’i appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Administration to answer questions regarding Miguna’s forceful deportation.

This comes after Justice Odunga sentenced Matiang’i, Inspector General Joseph Boinnet and Immigration PS Gordon Kihalangwa after he found them guilty of contempt of court.

In his final ruling, Judge Odunga fined the three Sh200,000 each.
