Criminals device new ways as crackdown on robbers continues in Nairobi

Public warned to be careful of this new scam

Members of the public have been warned to be careful as unscrupulous criminals have devised a new way to fleece them.

The smart criminals operate from cyber cafes where they copy documents from computers and use them to apply for loans without the knowledge of the owner.

Chief Executive Officer of Boresha Savings, Mr. Musa Chebor disclosed that many teachers have fallen prey to the tech-savvy criminals keen on making money without breaking a sweat.

“They keep reporting to us that unscrupulous individuals access their accounts and borrow loans without their awareness.” He disclosed.

Following the recent wave of crime, Chebor advised that “Once you finish downloading and printing your documents in cybercafes, order the computer attendants to delete all of them so they are not copied by criminals”.

Two suspects have so far been arrested in the new scam.

Maru Kerring and Zena Jeruto from Turbo and Ziwa respectively were arrested after they tried to obtain loans from a SACCO using other people’s documents which they had acquired fraudulently.

This comes as a crackdown on criminals is underway in Nairobi following a sharp increase in crime within the Central Business District in the recent past.

The criminals operating in groups held daring heists in broad daylight with some operating on motorbikes snatching valuables from pedestrians.
