ODM writes to Registrar, demands seats held by rebels be declared vacant

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has written to the Registrar of Political Parties and asked for the seats held by rebel MPs declared vacant.

In the letter signed by the party’s Executive Director Ongwen, ODM requested the Registrar, Lucy Ndung’u to move with dispatch and delist the rebels from its register of members.

The letter which was copied to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO, instructed the house speakers of the National Assembly and Nairobi County Assembly to declare the seats vacant.

The move follows the party’s National Governing Council meeting on Monday where they expelled 10 leaders from its party who had openly defected to the Jubilee Party.

Expulsion list

Topping the expulsion list are former Secretary General and now Labour Party of Kenya leader Ababu Namwamba, Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya, Mathare MP Steven Kariuki and nominated MP Isaac Mwaura.

Others include Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, Kwale Women Rep Zainab Chidzuga, MPs Samwel Arama, Masoud Mwahima, John Waluke and Viwandani MCA Samwel Nyangwara.

The party’s National Executive Council meeting on Sunday adopted the party’s disciplinary committee’s decision to de-register the leaders.

ODM last week removed the rebel MPs from key parliament committees.
