No, Henry Cavill Is Not 'Too Young' to Play Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher

Following the release of a new trailer for Netflix's The Witcher , some fans of the popular video games of the same name are doubtful that the show's lead, Henry Cavill , has what it takes to play Geralt of Rivia.

Henry Cavill Is Not 'Too Young' to Play Witcher

Ive only played a bit of one Witcher game but I feel confident in saying Netflix is a coward for not casting someone older, hairier, and more scarred up to play Geralt. This sucks on ice. pic.twitter.com/Q0m2aV8nL1 merritt k (@merrittk)

In the games, Geralt is a gruff, grizzled, gritty hero the chief concern here appears to be that Cavill is simply too good-looking for the role, with one fan tweeting that he is "way too pretty to be Geralt," and another suggesting that Jerome Flynn (aka Bronn from Game of Thrones) would have made for a better, more age-appropriate casting choice.

However, other fans pointed out that Netflix's version of The Witcher isn't based on the gaming series, but rather the novels on which the games are based . The first season specifically is inspired by The Last Wish, the first of Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy novels set on The Continent which takes place years before the events of the games.

It's also worth pointing out that within the world Sapkowski has created, characters age considerably differently than in real life, and the years don't always show (a prime example of this is Yennefer in the books). Geralt is in his 80s in the games, but is still buff enough to take down all manner of demons, dragons and other nasty supernatural creatures. Cavill might be a strapping 36-year-old, but his character will be much older.

Cavill is also a huge fan of the novels and was famously instrumental in making a TV adaptation of The Witcher happen. After beating more than 200 other actors who auditioned, he reportedly got so attached to the role of Geralt that he slept in a trailer near the set for weeks on end in order to help himself get into character.

Now that's the kind of dedication to a part that might just prove the naysayers wrong when The Witcher drops on Netflix on December 20.
