Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi on Friday officially launched the Internal Affairs Unit of the Kenyan police force.
Dr Matiang'i elaborated that the new unit will be charged with three key mandates.
First, to receive and investigate complaints against the police, promote consistent standards of discipline and order in the National Police Service and finally to keep a clear record of any complaints received and processed by the unit.
IAU kicked off its operations with 56 members drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Administration Police Service (APS) and the Kenya Police Service (KPS).

The unit will also partner with IPOA, KNHRC and Noordin Haji's ODPP.
The Interior CS also commissioned the unit's offices at the KCB Towers in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
"This symbolizes the dawn of a new era in so far as police accountability is concerned; and shall deepen the transformation of the NPS.
"The transformation will include the adoption of a digital Human Resource Information System bearing accurate, real-time data on our officers including, among others details, their recruitment, training, career progress, deployment and family records.
"This is the first time that such a record has been created within the service’s history; and we believe that it will infuse accountability, efficiency, honesty and professionalism amongst our officers," Matiang'i noted during the launch.
He further directed all police officers to register electronically at their respective sub-counties throughout the country
from December 3, 2018.
