The fridge is a perfect place to store your foods to keep them fresh.

Even so, some foods are better off stored in room temperature as they lose their flavor and nutritional value when in the fridge.

Tomatoes are highly perishable if not stored appropriately. And while storing them in the fridge does not make them go bad, it prevents them from ripening and they tend to lose their flavor. See other ways you can use to store your tomatoes for longer.

2. Onions

Your onions are best when at room temperature. This also applies to garlic as they get moist and moldy when in the fridge.

3. Fresh herbs

Instead of preserving your bunch of basil or dhania in the fridge, submerge them in water and keep them at room temperature. Storing them in the fridge takes away the aroma and also makes them wilt and dry sooner.

4. Potatoes

They don’t need refrigeration to last longer. In fact, storing them in the fridge converts their starch into sugars and also leads to discoloration. Just store them in net bags in a cool and dry place away from light.

5. Honey

No need to stuff up your fridge with honey containers whereas it can still do perfectly well under room temperature. You only have to ensure that the container is tightly sealed. Your honey may also crystallize if stored in the fridge for long periods.

6. Melons

According to a study published on the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, storing melons in the fridge affects the levels of their antioxidants activity. But if the melon is already cut, you can store it in the fridge for not more than four days.

7. Avocados

Unless your avocados are ripe, you should never store them in the fridge because they won’t ripen. Putting your avocados in an open brown bag or next to bananas will increase their ripening speed.

8. Coffee

The taste and aroma of coffee makes it an irresistible beverage. However, once you store in it in the fridge, coffee picks up the smell from all the other things in the fridge ruining its original flavor.

9. Bread

Bread does better while outside the fridge. The cold temperatures in the fridge does not only make it tough but also increases its chances of going stale.
