CS Pleads With DCI to Probe Death Threats in NHIF Scandal

A Cabinet Secretary wrote to the DCI to investigate death threats over the NHIF scandal.

Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki wrote the Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti after top officials in her Ministry received death threats.

A team of auditors sent to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) claimed that they had been threatened which led to top managers at the insurance fund being probed.

Those Behind the Threats

CS Kariuki wrote to DCI Kinoti over the threats and called for action to be taken on those behind the threats.

The Ministry of Health had sent internal auditors to examine books at the NHIF to enable it to make decisions following complaints of graft.

According to reports, the auditors asked to be recused from the planned audit and instead have another team sent in, indicating the veracity of the matter.

Last week on Tuesday and Wednesday, the auditors recorded statements with the police with one of the auditors claiming he was trailed into a supermarket and threatened over the matter.

Another auditor told the police he was confronted on Thika Road and warned against the planned audit or else ''he will see fire''.

Top NHIF Officials

This comes as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji recommended the prosecution of two top NHIF officials over a possible multi-million-shilling fraud.

Haji also recommended the probe of 11 officers over an alleged conspiracy to obstruct ongoing investigations at the fund handling Ksh33.5 billion from Kenyans.

NHIF's Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Mwangi and Finance Director Wilbert Kurgat, who was arrested on Friday night, will be arraigned in court today after the DPP approved their prosecution.
