On Thursday, the court slapped Mr Karanja with a Sh4m fine or 4 years in jail.
Mr Karanja was also banned from holding any public office in the country.
Fraudulent practice
Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi found the accused guilty of fraudulent practice involving a tender worth Ksh.47.6million.
He had earlier been charged alongside former Devolution PS Engineer Peter Mangiti and 23 others who were acquitted.
Karanja was then charged on his own for inserting Dama Services Ltd in the tender opening register for the procurement of training materials in the Automotive Engineering faculty tender No.NYS/RT/29/2014-2015, a move which had not been approved.
The landmark sentence in the NYS 1 case comes barely a week after the State vowed to seek maximum penalties and confiscating of assets of those implicated in the NYS 2 corruption scandal.
According to the prosecution, the suspects never paid taxes and therefore affected mobilisation of resources.
Prosecution lawyer Vera Khamisi said the Sh60 million, was just a tip of the Sh8 billion stolen from the NYS coffers for goods not delivered.
