Intruder who attacked DP Ruto's home killed (Photos)

Assailant who engaged police in an 18-hour heavy gun fire exchange has been shot dead.

The intruder who attacked the rural residence of Deputy President William Ruto was on Sunday morning shot dead by the General Service Unit (GSU) officers.

Police say they managed to kill the assailant at about 6am on Sunday, nearly 18 hours after the dramatic incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon. A gun he had snatched from a security officer at the home was recovered.

His body and that of a police officer who was also killed were taken to Moi referral hospital mortuary in the morning.

“We have two bodies here. One of the assailant and another one of an officer whom he had stabbed and held as a shield for this long,” said a witness who was at the scene on Sunday.

Witnesses said the officers had to use an Armoured Personnel Carrier from the military to get closer to where the attacker was hiding in order to bring him down.

Earlier reports indicated that four gunmen raided the home while William Ruto and his family members were away

It was said the four were killed by the elite Recce Squad hours after they attacked and injured a GSU officer at the gate.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet confirmed the siege ended on Sunday morning.

“The assailant has been shot dead and the weapon he had snatched recovered from him. The siege is over,” he stated adding that investigations were underway to establish the motive of the attack.

The Saturday afternoon incident shocked Kenyans with many of them wondering how a machete-wielding intruder would gain access to a residence usually guarded by an elite paramilitary police unit.
