Matiang’i’s valentine surprise causes trouble for top government officials

Matiang'i surprise mission on Valentine's Day

CS Matiang’i makes impromptu visit at Narok birth certificates office, lectures officials over poor services

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Thursday made an impromptu visit to the Narok Registrar of Person offices where he put senior government officials on the spot over delays in issuance of birth certificates.

The CS, though clad in a red shirt to match the spirit of Valentine’s Day, was in no mood for playing games as he threatened to sack officials who were sabotaging locals.

The locals had earlier complained to the CS that the Narok office had not issued any new birth certificates since April.

The official in charge, however, claimed that they had been issuing about 200 birth certificates in a month.

Registration of Births Kenya

If you are issuing 200 certificates, why is there backlog? Since April, people have been coming here and you keep telling them to come the next day and the day after. We know these rent-seeking tactics,” a visibly angered Matiang’i lectured the official in charge of the Narok office.

The head of the registration of births the Ministry of Interior was not spared as she was put on the spot for not being in touch with the ground.

You, as a head of department, you will never know anything by sitting in Nairobi. You must come here and see the foolishness we are seeing here,” he added before directing the area county commissioner to charge and make a report of the going-ons in the office.

Matiang’i was accompanied by Interior CAS Patrick Ole Ntutu and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

The CS also issued a one-week ultimatum to Narok County Commissioner, Police Commander and chiefs track down 2,600 last year's KCPE candidates who are yet to join Form One.
