Matiang’i makes fresh announcement after holding talks on new education system

KNUT had threatened to strike if the new system is implemented.

The CS clarified that the 8-4-4 education system would not be scrapped with immediate effect as reported in some quarters.

Matiang’i stated that many stakeholders had not understood the new 2-6-6-3 system, adding that it would be implemented in phases.

2027 deadline

In the planned implementation, the 8-4-4 system will be completely scrapped by 2027.

“It's not a switch on, switch off affair. We are conducting the implementation in phases,” the CS stated.

He added that there had been wide consultations with various stakeholders, including teachers’ unions which have now threatened to call for a strike in opposition to the controversial curriculum.

Some reports had indicated that the new system would mean that there would be no KCPE exam later this year.

The announcement came as students from across the country are reporting back to school following the long December vacation.
