An event that was scheduled to be graced by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was throWn into disarray at the last minute, prompting organizers to come up with alternative plans.
Odinga who as to be the chief guest at the Somaliland’s Investment Conference in Nairobi pulled out at the eleventh hour for undisclosed reasons.
He however reportedly met the organizers of the event which was also meant to serve a political purpose for Somaliland in private.
The event was also to be attended by Trade Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya who has occasionally pushed for the recognition of Somaliland during his term as the chairman of the Council of Governors.
The former Prime Minister who has been leading calls for the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state is seen as a valuable partner in the quest for independence by Somaliland from the Somalia government.
Appointment by AU
His appointment as the Africa Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa was weel received in Hargeisa with hope that Odinga who has been an ally of the semi-autonomous region could help it gain independence.
It is not clear if the absence of both Odinga and Munya as due to the sensitivity of the matter but they have emerged as key allies in Somaliland’s guest for political and economic autonomy.
During the event, Somaliland’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Yasin Mohammed Hiir appealed to Kenyans to join in building a prosperous Somaliland by taking advantage of the investment opportunities in his country.
