Uhuru reacts after learning students get corporal punishment at his former school

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday attended the 80^th anniversary at his alma mater – St Mary’s School where he relived some of his best moments at the institution.

Interestingly, students at the school used the occasion to complain about getting corporal punishment – murmuring after the President said they were lucky corporal punishment had ceased being applied in schools.

Although the government, through the Ministry of Education has criminalized corporal punishment in Kenyan schools, the President laughed off the matter.

“In those days, we used to dread when the dean would say, ‘the following are wanted at my office’. He would start with those getting three canes and proceed to those getting six of the best – the likes of Tony Munene.”

“You guys are lucky you don’t get caned (loud murmurs)…you mean you still get caned? (students murmur in affirmative), at least you are lucky it is not as bad as it was during our time,” President Kenyatta said.

The President went on to note that he was proud of St Mary’s School that had produced locally and internationally acclaimed personalities.

The school’s 80^th anniversary was attended by prominent personalities who are part of its alumni association.

Apart from President Kenyatta, others present included media personality Jeff Koinange who emceed the event, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, businessman Jimi Wanjigi, among others.
