Former KTN news anchor goes deaf

Louis is asking for financial support

The former journalist is suffering from acute pancreatitis and he has been frequenting hospitals for the past few years.

His family is asking for support from well-wishers to enable him undergo a specialized treatment in order for Louis to regain the ability to hear again.

The talented journalist, who has worked for KTN, KBC and Citizen Televisions is said to have lost his hearing while in hospital.

On Friday, a committee was formed to help raise Louis Otieno’s Medical Fund.

The committee disclosed that, “Efforts to get his hearing fixed including using hearing aids have not been successful,” it said. “During this period, he has not been able to engage in any gainful income generating activities which has been strenuous for him and family.”

The only way Louis hearing can be regained is by having a procedure undertaken in India called Cochlear implant where hearing aids are surgically implanted to amplify sounds so they may be detected by damaged ears.

Cochlearimplants bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. Signals generated by the implant are sent by way of the auditory nerve to the brain, which recognizes the signals as sound.

For the past four years Louis’s health has not been so good. Louis’s pictures while at Mater Hospital surfaced online some time back and it came as a shocker to many since not many knew what was happening. During that particular time, Louis was battling with alcoholism.

The cost of this surgery is high and the family is reaching out to friends, well-wishers, former workmates and anyone who feels moved to support this man get his hearing back.
