Atleast 4 confirmed dead in Sunday morning accident

At least four people died on Sunday morning in a road accident.

The four Kenyan who were on a pilgrimage to Namugongo’s Martyrs Catholic Shrine in Uganda met their death when they were hit by a matatu.

Reports indicate that all the deceased are memmbers of Bungoma Catholic Church Diocese and were part of atleast 150 pilgrims who were heading to the site.

John Opondo who witnessed the accident stated that the accident happened at around 5 AM when a Public Service Vehicle heading to Busia from Kampala rammed into the pilgrims.

Two lost their lives on the spot while two others lost died at Iganga hospital where they had been rushed.

"It was raining and the road was so slippery when the accident happened, " Opondo said.

Two of the deceased are from Kisoko parish while two others are from Naitiri parish in Bungome county.

This year's martyr's day will be marked on June 3. Every year, hundreds of Kenyan pilgrims make the journey to Uganda on foot in remembrance of the Ugandan martyrs who lost their lives because of their faith.

Reports indicate that the four bodies are scheduled to be brought to Kenya and handed over to Kenyan authorities later on at the Busia border.
