Ebenezer Academy pupil paralyzed after teacher allegedly canned him

A pupil is nursing serious injuries after a teacher allegedly canned him for scoring 81 marks instead of a 100 per cent in an English exam.

According to the parents of the 14-year-old who schools at Ebenezer Academy in Bungoma, the pupil fainted after he was canned.

The director of the private school begged teen not to report the matter and allow the school to take care of his medical expenses.

His father, Gerald Munyapala Khisa told journalists that the school management did not disclose to him his son’s condition until it worsened.

Reports by the Standard indicated that Mr Khisa said he received a call from the school director who informed him that his son was in a critical condition and was being taken to hospital.

He said the school director informed him that he took the pupil to the private facility where the director's medical insurance card would be used.

“The hospital bill rose to Sh252,894.65 in just one week and the director told me to have my son discharged from the hospital since he could not afford to pay more," Khisa claimed.

"He said that he had exhausted his limit and asked me to repay him Sh200,000 which he used to pay the hospital bill,” he added.

When Pulselive.co.ke contacted the school one of the directors gave a different version of events.

The Director who only identified himself as Mr Wanyama refuted claims that the pupil had been canned and his injuries were as a result of the beating.

Police investigation

Mr Wanyama claimed that the teenager had taken to hospital after falling sick and he was diagnosed with chronic malaria and later admitted for treatment at a private hospital.

His claims were, however, countered by the County Referral hospital administrator Dan Oswano who confirmed that the teenager was admitted at the male’s surgical ward “in critical condition”.

The parents have since booked the case at Bungoma Police station (OB No. 79/05/08/2019), where they say the pupil was caned while at school to a point that he could not walk.

Bungoma South sub-county Police Commander, Wilson Nanga, confirmed the incident saying the parents have even recorded statements with investigators over the matter.
