The department of immigration plans to issue out electronic passports from september.
Immigration department had early announced that they would start issuing ePassports beginning next month (April) but hold back to first lay down the groundwork and carry out enough awareness campaign to sensitize the public on its merits and conditions.
It is more tamper proof than the current analogue passport. The process of acquisition remains the same though.
All applications will be done online www.ecitizen.go.ke and therefore there will be no paper handling, Applicants will only visit immigration offices after online applications for Biometrics only.

The Cost of an ePassport remains the same,that is as per the current charges, but in case of any changes department of immigration has promised to communicate the same.
There is no need for worry for current passport holders with the analogue ones, the current passport remains valid until it expires.

Lastly yes! it is compulsory to change your current passports to the new generation but with time.
