Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang' Nyong'o and his family are in mourning following the passing of his mother, Mama Dorcas Owino Nyong'o.

ODM party leader Raila Odinga was among the first to send condolence messages to the family mourning her as a friend.

"Mama Ida Odinga and I mourn the passing of Mama Dorcas Owino Nyong'o, mother to Prof. Anyang' Nyong'o. Dorcas was a true matriarch and pillar of the Nyong'o family. She never stopped serving and guiding the family and the community she was part of despite her advancing years.

"Our family will be forever grateful for the friendship we formed that has stood the test of time. Our hearts and prayers are with the entire Nyong'o clan at this moment of grief. May God grant the family the fortitude and faith to cope with the loss," his message read.

Mama Dorcas' husband, Hesbon Shimei Nyong’o died in 2006 without a written will which threw the family into a series of legal battles that are yet to be finalized.

Governor Nyong'o out of the country

Governor Nyongo's lawyers on Tuesday conveyed that he was not in the country after he missed a critical court appearance.

The Kisumu governor and his sister Dr Risper Nyagoy both failed to appear before High Court Judge Thrispisa Cherere for sentencing after they were found guilty of contempt in a Sh200 million property row.

The sentencing hearing was postponed to Thursday where the two are facing six months in civil jail.
