The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued new guidelines to all secondary schools in Kenya following the alleged rape incident reported at the Moi Girls' School, Nairobi.

TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia said that the set rules are meant to safeguard learners.

In a circular, schools heads were instructed on how co-curricular activities should be handled, timing of programmes and the staff members interacting with students.

"All principals and headteachers shall ensure that for any co-curricular activity-games and sports, music, drama, scouts, girl guides, educational tours, congresses, exchange programmes, debates, symposia, contests within or outside the school, pupils and students are accompanied by at least one registered teacher of the same sex depending on the number of students or pupils involved in the activities," the statement reads in part.

The TSC barred persons not registered as teachers or whose names have been removed from the official register against participating in school programmes. This also applies to coaches training students in different activities.

The Commission further urged teachers to take responsibility as parents and act in the best interest of the students.

Mrs. Macharia added that there will be a time restriction on school activities noting that no programme will take place later than 9 pm.

"All teachers engaged with students or pupils in any school activity must ensure that they are released from the activities in time to enable them to reach their schools or homes before 6 pm.

"In boarding schools, activities programmed to take place after 6 pm must end at a reasonable time but not later than 9 pm," Macharia said.

The rape incident at Moi Girls's is still under investigations.
