Mama Rahab was receiving treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi when she died.
The former presidential candidate had mentioned his mother's illness during a live TV interview recently, noting the struggles of taking care of an ailing relative.
The family has explained that Mama Rahab had been ailing for a long time before her death.
Peter Kenneth in mourning
Secretary-General of UNCTAD Mukhisa Kituyi and Opposition leader Raila Odinga are among the first people who have sent their condolence messages to Kenneth through their social media platforms.
"I share the pain of my friend Peter Kenneth on the demise of his dear mother Rahab Wamboi. May you and family have the strength to come to terms with this loss," Dr Kituyi tweeted.
Former Prime Minister Odinga added: "My condolences go out to Peter Kenneth following the passing on of his Mother, Rahab Wambui Muhuni. May God grant him and the family strength and fortitude at this trying moment and may her soul rest in eternal peace. Poleni kwa msiba (Sorry for your loss)."
