Why are you embarrassing me? Raila after Kisumu residents heckle him over Muhoroni Industrial Park

ODM leader Raila Odinga on Monday afternoon accused residents in Kango village, Muhoroni of embarrassing him after they heckled as he was making a case for a government project in the area.

Trouble started when Odinga visited the area to launch an industrial park that was part of the goodies promised by President Uhuru Kenyatta to Nyanza region.

Angry protesters said the government did not consult them about the project and claimed the handshake was being used to grab land.

Why are you embarrassing me? I am bringing development yet you are not keen on the projects that will benefit you”.

"There is no need of SGR bringing goods to Kisumu from Mombasa then going back empty handed. We must ensure through economic zones that whenever they bring goods, they go back with it to enhance trade," Odinga said as security agencies intercepted the protesters.

The former Prime Minister was accompanied by Cabinet secretaries Peter Munya (Trade and Industrialisation), James Macharia (Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development) and John Munyes (Mining).

Odinga insisted the project would go on as it had been agreed by regional leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The land in question initially belonged to the local residents who were later relocated due to persistent flooding in the area.

The land was taken over by the Kisumu Municipal Council and later transferred to the Kisumu county government which agreed to the industrial project in a deal with the national government.

The park was to be part of a special economic zone that was expected to compliment the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) if and when it reaches Kisumu.
