Ghanaian government releases $4 million to its Youth in Afforestation programme

The government of Ghana has released about $4 million to beneficiaries of the Youth in Afforestation programme.

President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo

This revelation follows a threat some workers of the Youth in Afforestation program of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), who are planting trees in selected areas across the country made to the government.

These workers threaten to embark on a full strike if the government and the Forestry Commission failed to pay their accumulated allowances by the end of this month.

This has hence triggered the government to make payment to avoid the menace.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, revealed that an amount of $4 million has been disbursed to beneficiaries of the Youth in Afforestation programme.

According to him, the Commission has been paying the allowances of the beneficiaries since April and that another GH₵21 million will be paid by Friday.

He said, “I can report that conferring with the banks, the monies have been paid but there are a few who are still in the process of being paid. We’ve spoken with GCB Bank and they confirmed that the monies have gone.”

He further added that “I believe that by close of the day today (Wednesday, December 19, 2018), all of them will have their allowances paid. That also includes not only the August allowance by the July allowances. In a weeks’ time, another money will hit their account and I can assure you that they will also be laughing all the way to the bank so we all celebrate this yuletide.”
