Nairobi, Mombasa are now more popular destinations with Britons than Las Vegas

Demand for trips to Nairobi are up 156 per cent and to Mombasa by 181 per cent

The research by UK travelling site, Kayak.co.uk., says demand for trips to Nairobi are up 156 per cent, shooting the Kenyan capital's ranking in popularity from 48th in 2017 to 15th in 2018.

Likewise, demand for trips to Mombasa are up by 181 per cent making the coastal city Britain's 44th most popular international holiday destination for this summer, having previously not featured close to the top 100.

The site analyses searches made by Britons for trips beyond Europe. It cites July to August as the best times that Britons want to come to Kenya.

Neil Cartwright, travel expert at Kayak.co.uk, hails this new trend saying Brits are searching out more exotic destinations that they haven't visited before.

Exotic destinations

"Internationally, there has been a huge shift towards the Subcontinent as well as Africa – the increase in demand for Kenyan destinations in particular is quite sensational," noted Mr. Cartwright.

"This might suggest that Brits are looking for alternatives to the summer classics and are searching out more exotic destinations that they haven't visited before."

In Africa,Nairobi came in second after Lagos which has also made huge strides, jumping from 31st place to 13th when it comes to overall demand.

Bobby Kamani, the managing director of Diani Reef Beach Resort said Britons prefer Kenya as it is a fairly inexpensive tourist destination that offers "undiluted fun."Last year, UK and Germany residents accounted for over half of all tourists coming to Kenya from Europe, according to the Economic Survey 2017.
