Kenyan governor survives drowning scare after bridge collapses
The incident occurred after the bridge he was standing on caved in.
Machakos governor Alfred Mutua was on a tour of Ogembo area, south-western Kenya, alongside Kisii deputy governor Joash Maangi when the bridge suddenly collapsed.
The two, alongside a few other officials, fell into the river but were swiftly rescued by their aides and rushed to hospital.
Kisii Communication Director Maseme Machuka, in a statement, said the bridge collapsed due to weight and structural weakness.
Governor Mutua made light of the situation saying he had been “baptised in River Gucha and felt at home.”
"I feel blessed and baptized by the waters of this very important river. The people of Gucha are telling me now I have become their child and should even come and build a home in the region," the governor said in a tweet.
