Kenya's repeat Presidential poll has been moved to Uhuru Kenyatta's birthday date

The new election date will be a big day for President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenya’s repeat Presidential election will be held on October 26, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has announced.

The electoral body issued the new date on Thursday stating that the decision was taken to ensure the commission is fully prepared in light of the judgment of the Supreme Court which was delivered on Wednesday.

“In order to ensure that the commission is fully prepared to deliver an election that meets the standards set out by the Supreme Court, we wish to notify the public and all stakeholders that the fresh presidential election shall now be held on Thursday October 26, 2017,” said IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati in the statement.

The re-run was initially scheduled to take place on October 17, but French firm OT-Morpho, whose technology is being used for the polls, said it would not be ready in time for that date.

Coincidentally, the new election date will be a big day for President Uhuru Kenyatta as he will be celebrating his 56 birthday.

Mr Kenyatta was born and brought up at Ichaweri, Gatundu township and is the son to the late founding father of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta and Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

He will be battling his arch-rival and National Super Alliance candidate Raila Odinga in the repeat poll top following the nullification of his Aug 8 win by the Supreme Court.
