Ghana dethrones Namibia to become Africa's best country in World Press Freedom Index

At the bottom of the ranking was Eritrea at 179th, Africa’s worst placement.

The ranking published annually by the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) since 2002, noted that Ghana is one of Africa's most democratic countries where media pluralism and independence are guaranteed in its constitution.

Ghana ranked 23rd in the global list followed closely by Namibia (26th) and South Africa (28th) to complete the top three slots for Africa. At the bottom of the ranking was Eritrea at 179th, Africa’s worst placement.

The Index measures the level of media freedom in 180 countries, including the level of pluralism, media independence, and respect for the safety and freedom of journalists.

Press freedom

Curbs and limitations on press freedom remain a huge concern on the continent and media watchdogs and press freedom advocates have been voicing these concerns.

A strong part of press freedom is opinions, the ability to air one’s opinions without fear of attack or intimidation to silence.

In countries like Ethiopia, press freedom has been under tight government control. Tanzania’s President Pombe Magufuli has also been criticised for curbing press freedom.
