Mwene signed a three-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2021.

Mwene signed a three-year contract earlier this week that will keep him at the club until 2021.

"Philipp Mwene is a very strong and versatile attacking full back, who has developed constantly to become a go-to player in the second division. We see his potential to make the next step with us and are pleased that he has opted for Mainz," sporting director Rouven Schroeder said.

The 24-year-old new arrival played since July 2016 for lower league side Kaiserslautern where he made 65 appearances to provide four goals and nine assists.

Harambee Stars call-up

"I am really looking forward to my new club, my team and task. I see my transfer to Mainz as a great chance to prove myself on the next level. I am an offensively minded full back who always pushes actively forward," Mwene said.

The defender has expressed his desire severally to feature for the Kenya national team, Harambee Stars but he’s yet to receive the maiden call.

Mainz completed the Bundesliga season 2017/18 on the 14th place of the standings.
