Over the weekend, Kenyan singer Akothee became the talk of the town after a raunchy performance at Paparemo Beach (Watamu) that left tongue wagging.

The Watamu concert has been one of Akothee’s most divisive concerts yet as Kenyans were literally ‘split in the middle’ on how to rate it.

A section of Kenyans felt that the performance was ‘immoral’ and that she was a bad role model while others enjoyed the whole free show insisting that it isn’t Akothee’s job to become a role model, after all, she is an entertainer and she was just doing what she is supposed to do.

Others also took issue with those critical of Akothee saying it was very hypocritical of them to condemn Akothee while busy enjoying performances from other leotard-wearing musicians like Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B.

While these two teams were going at each other, there were those who found humour in the whole drama and decided to kill time by photo shopping Akothee on to bikes, horses and even a Harry Potter broomstick.

Ezekiel Mutua to Akothee

One of Akothee’s most passionate critics has been KFCB Boss Ezekiel Mutua who has described her as ‘talented’ but chases clout with ‘filthy and stupid stunts.

In a Facebook Post, the Kenya Film Classification Board boss wrote:

"Kenya has got talent but as long as we keep celebrating this kind of madness, our entertainment industry will never grow. Akothee is talented but the filthy and stupid stunts she has to pull to remain relevant should concern all of us. What's worse is to see grown up men and women celebrating this scatological obscenity in the name of entertainment. We have lost it as a nation. People like Akothee cannot be the role models for our daughters. Music doesn't have to be dirty to sell. How I wish artists like Akothee would know how much influence they have on our youths and try to use that influence to produce content that is edifying. This kind is crass, moronic and a theatre of the absurd. It's demonic to the core and only appeals to debilitating and incorrigible perverts and brainless audiences. Akothee must stop this idiosyncrasy. There's no dignity in for her or her audience,” read Dr Mutua’s post.
