3 Soldiers Killed in Training Accident at Fort Stewart in Georgia, Official Says

Three soldiers were killed and three others injured in a training accident at an Army base in Georgia on Sunday, an official said.

The soldiers were in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle that was involved in an early-morning accident at the base, Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield, the official, Maj. Gen. Tony Aguto, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, said in a statement.

Three soldiers were pronounced dead at the scene and three others were taken to Winn Army Community Hospital. They were part of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team.

The specifics of the accident and the conditions of the injured soldiers were not immediately available.

“Today is a heartbreaking day for the 3rd Infantry Division, and the entire Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield community,” the general said. “We are extremely saddened by the loss of three Dogface Soldiers, and injuries to three more. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families affected by this tragedy.”

Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield, which is in Hinesville, Georgia, about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, describes itself as being responsible for training, equipping and deploying active and reserve component Army units.

The expansive facility includes 288,000 acres and features multiple tank and armored fighting vehicle gunnery, helicopter gunnery and small arms ranges.
