According to Police the heavy rains and impatient drivers compounded the situation, making any efforts to clear the jam impossible.
Heavy downpour triggers traffic snarl up causing hundreds of motorists to spend the night on the road
Sunday morning efforts to clear the traffic were still ongoing as some motorist had to search for fuel after they ran out on fuel.

According to Machakos County Commissioner Matilda Sakwa an accident at Prima Rosa which involved a truck and a pick-up caused the gridlock.
The driver of the pick-up died on the spot.
In the city, most roads are flooded with Nairobi’s South C area being the most affected following heavy downpour since Friday.
Some residential houses in South C were rendered uninhabitable following the floods, while vehicles were seen halfway submerged due to the fact that most houses in the area have been constructed on or near wetlands and riparian land.
On Wednesday the meteorological department warned Kenyans to brace themselves for a heavy downpour in the coming 48 hour.
