The move is likely to throw the whole debate into disarray barely a week after both President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga pulled out of the presidential debate which was later postponed to July 4.
In a statement to the press, the Presidential Debate Steering Committee indicated that the move was made to allow consultations with the various campaign teams as well as give time for briefing sessions on the debate format and other logistical details.
Speaking exclusively to , Ruto’s spokesman David Mugonyi could not confirm or deny but said he would consult the Deputy President on the matter before a statement is issued.
According to Nairobi News, a source close to the DP indicated that Ruto cited “liitle consulations” by the organisers of the debate.
“The letter inviting the DP to the debate only came to the office yesterday. The organisers of the debate have run the debate with little consultation despite the same issues being raised by the candidates in 2013,” said the source.
It is reported that no one was consulted on the dates and it was picked without reference to the campaign schedule.
Ruto was set to face off with Raila's running mate Kalonzo Musyoka and six others in the Monday debate at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).
The American-style debates aimed at providing a platform where candidates reach out to the widest possible Kenyan audience to explain how they would govern Kenya if elected.
They are also aimed at helping voters make informed choices, promoting national cohesion and steering campaigns towards the quality of leadership rather than personalities.
