2002 Incident that Created Bad Blood between Raila and Matiang’i
A high ranking ODM official has made the revelations after Matiangi banned anti-NASA demos.
ODM deputy Communications Director Seth Odong, popularly known as Dikembe Disembe, claimed that Matiang’i developed a vendetta against Odinga after the current NASA leader refused to endorse then presidential candidate Simeon Nyachae.
The ODM communications official was responding to the recent cancellation of anti-IEBC demons by the Interior CS.
While Odongo's claims are unsubstantiated, Nyachae, in his memoirs admits that his campaign was badly affected by Odinga’s famous Kibaki Tosha declaration.
The former Cabinet Minister accused Odinga of betraying a pact where the two had agreed to work together.
While Matiang’i had gained much prominence since his nomination to the Cabinet in 2013, the no-nonsense CS has been a behind the scenes player in Kenya’s political history.
He previously worked as the Personal Assistant and later as campaign manager in Nyachae’s unsuccessful bid in 2002.
Matiang’i later worked with international civil society organizations including the World Bank, USAID, Transparency International, and the Centre for International Development. He also taught at Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the State University of New York (SUNY).
