There are a few things to be considered before going on a break. Especially if you don't want to hurt your significant other.
1. Make sure the decision is mutual
One partner may be uncomfortable with the idea of a break. Don't just send a text "We need a break." That would be insensitive. Try to sit down and discuss what they issue is and why you need the break.
2. Set some ground rules
If you live together, will you be sleeping in separate rooms? Will one of your go to stay elsewhere? Are you allowed to see other people? How long will you be on a break for? If one of you wins the jackpot during the break, are you obliged to share it?

Unless it's decided otherwise, try to stay on each other's radar. Check on each other. Text the way you would with your closest friend. Let them know when you're travelling or of any life-changing events.
4. Arrange your financial responsibilities
Whatever bills or payments you shared, keep to them. Don't ditch them on your S/O just because you're on a break.
5. It's no reason to be insensitive
Just because you're technically not together, doesn't give you licence to hurt each other's feelings. Don't flaunt your "freedom" or make it seem like your relationship was a chore you couldn't wait to get away from. Act like you would when you send your only child to boarding school. Exercise your relief with restraint.
